About Carboy Corner

Who writes Carboy Corner and how we score gear.

Carboy Corner started the way most good home brewing stories start: with a batch gone sideways. Back in 2016, our founder, Russ Keating, cracked open what was supposed to be a crisp American wheat beer and instead got a gusher that smelled faintly of nail polish remover. The culprit, after weeks of troubleshooting, turned out to be a cheap plastic carboy with a hairline scratch that had been harboring wild yeast for months. That frustrating, beer-wasting experience planted a simple idea: brewers and winemakers deserve honest, detailed information about the equipment they're trusting with their time, ingredients, and patience.

What began as a hand-typed spreadsheet shared with a local homebrew club in Asheville, North Carolina, slowly grew into a full review site. Today, Carboy Corner is run by a small team of hobbyists-turned-reviewers who split time between testing gear in our own basements and garages and digging through manufacturer specs, patent filings, and community forums to separate marketing claims from reality.

Who's Behind the Site

Our core team includes Russ (all-grain brewer of twelve years and recovering extract-brewing purist), Dana Ferris (a winemaker who started with kit wines and now manages a small backyard vineyard of cold-hardy grapes), and Marcus Oduya (a mechanical engineer by trade who handles our equipment teardown testing and anything involving pressure, temperature calibration, or stainless steel fabrication). Between the three of us, we've fermented everything from traditional Belgian lambics to pét-nat ciders, and we've broken more airlocks, cracked more carboys, and miscalibrated more hydrometers than we'd like to admit. That hands-on failure, honestly, is where most of our expertise comes from.

We're not professional brewers or winemakers by trade, and we don't pretend to be. We're serious hobbyists who happen to be obsessive about gear, data, and clear writing. That perspective is intentional — most of our readers are home brewers and winemakers, not commercial producers, and we review accordingly.

Our Founding Story

After that first bad batch, Russ started a habit of documenting every piece of equipment he tried: fermenters, airlocks, wort chillers, hydrometers, bottling gear, oak alternatives, and more. He tracked failure rates, cleaning difficulty, and how products actually performed over multiple batches rather than just out of the box. Friends from his homebrew club started asking for recommendations, then asking him to write things down. In 2018, Carboy Corner officially launched as a website, and it has grown steadily since through word of mouth in brewing and winemaking communities rather than aggressive marketing.

How We Review and Select Products

Every product featured on Carboy Corner goes through a consistent evaluation process before it earns a spot on the site:

  • Hands-on testing when possible. We purchase the majority of the equipment we review with our own funds specifically so we can test it through real fermentation cycles, not just a quick unboxing.
  • Multi-batch evaluation. Where relevant, we use equipment across several batches — different beer styles, wine varietals, or cider recipes — to see how it holds up to repeated use, cleaning, and storage.
  • Specification verification. We cross-check manufacturer claims (capacity, material grade, temperature tolerance, airflow rate) against independent lab data, patents, and third-party testing where available.
  • Community and long-term feedback. We read through homebrew forums, Reddit threads, and club discussions to understand how products perform over months or years of ownership, not just in the first week.
  • Comparative testing. Products are evaluated against direct competitors in the same price range and category so our rankings reflect real alternatives, not isolated opinions.

We clearly label any review based on extended research and community data rather than direct hands-on testing, and we update older reviews when manufacturers change materials, designs, or pricing.

What Makes Carboy Corner Trustworthy

We maintain a strict editorial policy: our opinions are never for sale. While some links on Carboy Corner are affiliate links that earn us a small commission if you make a purchase, this never influences which products we recommend or how we rank them. We've turned down sponsorship offers that came with strings attached regarding review scores, and we will continue to do so. If a product is mediocre, we say so, even if it means a smaller commission check.

We also believe in transparency about our limitations. We're not able to test every product on the market, and our recommendations reflect the gear we've had access to and the brewing styles our team practices most — primarily ales, meads, and still wines, with growing experience in cider and sour beer production. When we haven't tested something directly, we tell you.

Finally, we treat this site as an ongoing project, not a static catalog. Equipment lines change, manufacturers update materials, and new products enter the market constantly. We revisit our top recommendations at least twice a year to make sure they still hold up, and we retire or downgrade products that no longer meet our standards.
